Rum is a distilled beverage made from sugar cane by-products, such as molasses and sugar cane juice, by a process of fermentation and distillation. The distillate, which is a clear liquid, is then usually aged in oak and other casks. While there are a rum producers around the world including, Barbados, India and Australia, the majority of rum production occurs in and around the Caribbean and along the Demerara River in South America. Normally less potent than regular white or aged rums, flavoured rum is infused with extracts from various rums such as apple, banana, mango, orange, citrus, and coconut and can often taste nice served straight with ice, although many flavours are becoming an important part of many tropical-style cocktails.
