All brandies come from distilled wines. Brandy can come from either the distillate of grape wine or from any fermented fruit. The word Brandy comes from the Dutch word brandewijn, meaning burnt wine. It was introduced to Europe, from France and Spain by Dutch traders in the 16th Century. It is normally consumed as an after dinner drink. Many varieties of brandy come from different countries, each having its own name : Armagnac - grape brandy from the Pays de Gascogne in south west France; Cognac - grape brandy from a region north of Bordeaux, France; Grappa - made from the residue of wine making (grape skins, seeds, stems etc.) Italy; Calvados - apple brandy from Normandy; Metaxa - grape brandy from Greece; Pisco - grape brandy from South America; Slivovitz - fruit brandy made from plums from Drinkswell, stocks all these varieties of brandy and is also able to order Vintage Armagnacs for anniversaries and gifts for that special year.
