Sambuca only became really fashionable in the 1980s when it was given the unique serving suggestion of setting it alight containing 3 coffee beans. The sambuca was then put out and the drink quickly downed. If you want to flame sambuca this use a thin sherry glass or shot glass since these will give a smaller surface area. Usually sambuca lights better with a smaller surface area. In Italy when you are asked if you want coffee beans in your sambuca you are actually asked if you would like it "com la mosca", which means with the fly! Sambuca gains its name from the elderberry's Latin name (Sambucus niger). This is a great plant with beautiful black berries in the autumn and winter.
