Lazzaroni Sambuca is a sweet strong liqueur with a base of essential oils from the star anise which are then added to added to a concentrated solution of of sugar and other natural aromas. This is best served "alla mosca" with three coffee beans floating in it or over ice as a shootera (Flaming Sambuca) but is also very popular straight up as a shot. The name 'Sambuca' originates from the scientific name for the elder tree, 'Sambuca Nigra', which grows abundantly throughout Italy. The oil from the elder tree is used in the production of Sambuca as also are the white elder blossoms which, after distillation, along with the anise seeds and various other ingredients, create Sambuca unique flavour.
