Schlenkerla Rauchbier is the springtime sister to Urbock from the same brewery, consequently lighter in alcohol content and presumably designed to be more refreshing. On first opening the bottle, one is hit by the overpowering smoked malt smell, alarmingly akin to kippers. A good sniff close to the head is a little better - more woodsmokey and less fishy. On the palate it is hugely dominated by the smoked malt, although there is a caramelly malt character and a touch of hop at the threshold of detectability. If you take bigger swigs the smoke is less overpowering, although the flavour seems to coat the palate very quickly. there is a definite woody hint, and even a vinous quality to it. An acquired taste, like snails/caviar/oysters.
