Guinness Foreign Extra Stout 33cl

This is the well-respected export stout from Guinness. It pours a rich brown-black colour and has a thick, bubbly, rocky head with an aroma of heavy, treacley malt and bitter hops. The palate is bitterness like thick, hopped malt extract, followed by an extremely treacley, smoky malt flavour with a tinge of sweetness. There is a chewy mouthfeel, which combined with the intense bitterness makes it quite a challenge to get through towards the end of a session. Aftertaste is again severely bitter and malty. A powerful, intense, memorable sledgehammer of a beer, impressive in its own right - a stout with balls. Guinness has three outposts in Nigeria: this example was from Ikeja. Working 'under close supervision' of the St James Gate brewery, they produce a blend of a light local beer (bottom fermenting?) with a stronger liquid brewed locally using concentrate sent from Dublin
