Pietra Beer 33cl

Pietra Beer from Corsica uses Chestnuts in malted form in the breweing. It's actually a pasteurised lager, but on the stronger, darker side; the subtitle 'bière ambrée' aptly describes this. Pietra is a pleasant, quite orangey amber beer, it pours lively with a small head. The aroma is hoppy with soft malt, some slightly creamy notes. There's a firm and full palate with malt, sweetish orange fruit, some cakey flavours and a definite hint of nuts; also quite a tartness which becomes more marked as the flavour develops. The finish is mainly dry with a few delicate fruit notes and a little hop bitterness. An intriguing beer, quite big-bodied and reminiscent of both a malty German 'spezial' lager and a full-bodied amber bière de garde; the chestnuts aren't obvious but there's certainly something unusual about the taste.
