Pietra 33cl

Corsica is famed for its chestnuts, which grow especially on the north of the island, so perhaps it's not so surprising that someone decided to use them to make a speciality beer: they're included in malted form in this bottle Pietra. It's actually a pasteurised lager, but on the stronger, darker side; the subtitle 'bière ambrée' aptly describes this. Its a pleasant, quite orangey amber beer, pours lively, with a small head. The aroma is hoppy with soft malt, some slightly creamy notes. There's a firm and full palate with malt, sweetish orange fruit, some cakey flavours and a definite hint of nuts; also quite a tartness which becomes more marked as the flavour develops. The finish is mainly dry with a few delicate fruit notes and a little hop bitterness. An intriguing beer, quite big-bodied and reminiscent of both a malty German 'spezial' lager and a full-bodied amber bière de garde; the chestnuts aren't obvious but there's certainly something unusual about the taste.
