(Speyside Dufftown) Convalmore 1981 70cl

Convalmore 1981 bottled 1998. Convalmore the distillery was mothballed in 1985, but bought by Wm Grant & Sons, who own its neighbouring Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie, to be used as warehouse space. Convalmore has only been bottled as a single malt by independent bottlers and never the distillers. The nose is unusually expressive, very floral with very nice hints of fruit (coconut, banana, mango, apple). A real invitation. Palate: A wonderful complexity, starting on slightly acid notes (citrus fruit) which are soon replaced by a kind of alcohol feeling, fading rapidly to make room for some very nice smooth malty notes. Well-balanced. Becoming less chocolatey, more biscuity and drier. Finish: Dry, nutty and spicy. Fruity lemon pith. Warming. Long .Powerful. Comment: The best Convalmore I have tasted, with the typically big, fruity syrupiness. After dinner. Needs a splash of water, but much smoother than expected.
