(Speyside Devron) Banf 1976 70cl

Banf 1976 bottled 2005. The distillery has an incredibly fascinating history dating back to 1824 enduring fire, bombing and explosions before finally falling silent in 1983. Nose: Big age oakiness with hints of lavender and a pleasing saltiness. Still malty, very lightly smoked, but a little sappy, too. Palate: Sweet and bourbon-y early on with lashings of honeyed finesse. Very intense and pleasantly oily; slightly plummy. The taste developes gently on more woody hints, while remaining amazingly fresh. Finish: Medium to long with some impressive vanilla. Sweetness and dryness, becoming astringently peaty. Long, warming. Remains thick on the palate for a long time with the toastiness at last drying things a little. Comment: Banff is an evocatively old-fashioned Highland malt, and it has stood up well to great age. A fabulous whisky for its age.
